the praying-life

I read a must-read recently, The Praying Life by Paul E. Miller. And this morning in church, Pastor Leon’s message from Ephesians and Paul’s life was on prayer. Thank you, Lord, for the call, the reminder, the privilege to pray.

Here is a bit of what the Lord is teaching me…

Ephesians 6:18-20 (ESV)

“…praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel,”

The praying life is a privilege, it is the Christian’s delight. Then why oftentimes do we find ourselves, Christians, not delighting in prayer? Because, like in any relationship, if the communication is poor, the relationship is usually poor. So, let be reminded through Scripture that prayer is our duty, our delight and with all diligence and desire, let’s enter into the praying life.

The praying life – What does that look like? I think Scripture gives us some glimpses : Ephesians 6 says that prayer is supplication for the saints, that prayer perseveres, that prayer keeps us and stays us, alert; that prayer is praying the gospel is declared. Philippians 4 says we are not to be anxious, we are to pray about everything, supplication with thanksgiving let all be known to God. To the Lord – He is Key in prayer. To HIM we pray, let it all be known.

As we pray, as we enter into communion, conversation, companionship with the Lord, we develop by His Word with the Helper, the Holy Spirit, the mind of Christ. We pray the Word, the will of God. We pray as we ought, upright motives, by the Helper’s guidance. God guides us to pray rightly, with the will of God through His Word. We pray in and through every circumstance. We pray constantly. We pray and pray and pray and pray. Lord, is this what you would have? have me to do? How am I to respond? Praying…

With this in our minds (our minds of Christ), what is “this”? It is, of course, the Word of God, The Helper indwelling us, … our decision making process as we pray is laid out before the Lord, because we have made all of it known to Him and then we decide, Wisdom applied. We keep alert with all perseverance. We trust in the Lord; we entrust ourselves to Him. We enjoy intimacy with the Lord; we, enjoying unity in love with our brothers and sisters in Christ, pray for saints, for ministry, for the preaching of the Gospel.

And then we join in this life, the praying life, the Christ-Life, saints, in ministry, preaching the Gospel, assisting those who proclaim the kingdom of God. New creations made alive in Him, rejoicing, praying, thanking, seeing, living…

down to every little jot and tittle of our lives. Christ is Life, the Hope of Glory.
