How to Host * A Baby Shower

A few weekends ago, I had the privilege to host a baby shower for my sweet friend Laura. It was such a fun time – full of good food, really good friends, and sweet little baby boy gifts! Here are my tips to make a baby shower memorable for the mommy and a successful shower for you!

1. Gather friends together – a group of hostesses is so much fun!

A group of friends to host the shower adds to the fun – each girl takes part in the planning, preparation, and pulling off the event 🙂

2. Order the cutest invitations possible!

I wanted to gift my friend Laura with the cutest invites – she is such a cute girl with such great style that I wanted to shower her with love even through choosing the perfect invitation.

I ordered the invitations from Swoozies. They have great customer service, timely turnaround, and reasonable prices.

Isn't this Swoozies Original invitation just precious!?

If Swoozies doesn’t have the perfect invitation for your event, browse through these Raleigh stationers and a their websites for other local stores.

** Frances King Stationery at North Hills

** Everything But the Bride and Everything But the Baby in Wake Forest

** Salutations Fine Stationery and Gifts in Chapel Hill

( The mommy is to provide a list of the girls she wants to invite, complete with their mailing addresses – This is her only task 🙂

3. Stylish Paper Products, Flowers, & Fun Make a Shower an Extraordinary One!

* The paper products were purchased from Papertown, a Raleigh local favorite for cute and affordable party supplies.

* Boyish & Fun *

* Cute Coordinating Napkins *

* The flower arrangements were designed with vases we owned, flowers from a few different retailers, and a bit of creativity!

* Simply Elegant *

The fun games included everyone and Laura took home all of the baby food for little boy baby Navey!

* Guess The Baby Food Game *

4. Complete The Party with a Cute Cake!

Since a picture is worth a thousand words, I will simply show you the beautiful baby shower cake. It will leave you oohing and aahing and with your mouth watering 😉

* The Picture-Perfect Cake *

5.  The Most Important Part is the People!

* Think through your menu – have a well-rounded menu that includes a main dish, fruits and veggies, and salty and sweet appetizers.

* Gruyere Quiche *

* Spinach Quiche *

* All Ready to Enjoy *

* Set the home’s temperature to accommodate having many people in your home; have plenty of comfortable seating in an intimate space.

* We all filled in and fit perfectly *

* Include in your menu a little something special –  since the shower was on a cold January morning, we served hot apple cider!

* We served the cider in pretty tea cups and mugs *

5. Make it a memorable shower for the mommy.

* As the hostesses, we decided to purchase together a couple of Laura’s big gifts on her registry.

* Laura Opening All of the Presents *

* We purchased cute thank you cards and asked all of the guests to fill out the address so that Laura would be able to focus on writing the thank you instead of taking time to fill out the addresses of each girl. I purchased this set from Target.

* We provided pen and paper and took the position to write down the gift giver’s name and gift they gave.

* Thank you Notes *

The shower was such a success!!  – With planning, preparation, and great people to work with, all of the guests were comfortable, enjoyed the morning brunch, and Laura went home happy – knowing she is loved and with a car full of fun baby gifts!

* Pretty Laura & Sweet Friends *

SOUP :: It’s What’s for Dinner

The recipe I am sharing with you is a “modified by me” recipe of Broccoli and Cheddar Soup I got from the website, www.allrecipes.com. I wanted to serve up a hot, comforting dish to my family for dinner because it’s so cold outside this week. I am always so nervous when I cook, so when Tyler, my husband, and my sister, Noelle, and I really enjoyed this yummy recipe for dinner, I decided I would share it with you! It’s perfectly cheesy and flavorful – I am sure your family will love it too! ~

Crockpot Cooking ~ A Great Timesaving Way to Serve your Family Dinner

Broccoli and Cheddar Soup

You Will Need :

1/4 c butter

1 onion, medium dice

2 tsp garlic salt

1/2 tsp pepper

16 oz broccoli (I used fresh broccoli because I got it for free with a sale+coupon at Target)

1 qt low sodium chicken broth

1/2 c flour

1 1/2 c skim milk

8 oz  skim cheddar cheese (I bought a block of it because it’s less $$ but it’s less time to buy already shredded)

After You Gather All of Your Ingredients :

1. Sautee onion in pan with a Tbs of the 1/4 cup of butter. Add garlic salt.

2. Melt the rest of the butter and pour it into the crock pot.

3. Chop broccoli and shred cheese.

4. Whisk together milk and flour.

5. Add all ingredients into crock pot and heat on low for 2-3 hours.

6. When you serve it, if it’s too hot, add a little bit of milk to help to cool it down.

Enjoy!

Pretty as a Picture

Apples to Apples Crazy Comparison Game (Under Twenty Dollars) – I love crazy clean fun and for under twenty dollars (I found a great deal at Target and purchased the game for seventeen dollars) the children that I take care of loved loved loved this game! Sweet Holiday Treat :: Peppermint Bark

For family and friends, neighbors and the mailman, I like to make yummy thank you treats at Christmas. Peppermint Bark is my favorite treat recipe to make and it seems to be the favorite with family and friends, too! The simple recipe makes several goody bags of Peppermint Bark and a yummy message that Christmas is here!

** I love Martha Stewart's Recipe, except that I do not include the cereal **

Ready to Go!

** Mini Candy Canes are Less Money and Easier to Mash **

RACHEL’S TIPS ::

** Good News! You do not have to own a double boiler to make Peppermint Bark. I use a larger pot underneath a smaller one. Put the water in the larger pot; the chips in the smaller and hold it carefully, unless the two pots can rest together easily.

See what I mean? 🙂

** Purchase the store brand’s white chocolate chips – it is so much less expensive and the chips work really well. I like Target’s brand, Market Pantry. The MP chips melt much better; Nestle chips become pasty like play dough towards the end of the melting process which makes it hard to spread out on the wax paper.

** I purchased cute celophane Christmas goody bags in the dollar section at Target. For twenty bags and ties, it’s only one dollar. I like to tie colored ribbon around the tie to “dress it up”!

Fun & Festive - and the Perfect Size!

** Prep your pan and the ingredients before you begin melting the chocolate. Once the chocolate is melted, it is important to move quickly so that the chocolate does not re-harden and the candy cane does not stick into the chocolate.

** I use twelve candy canes per one pan of Peppermint Bark.

** I do not sift – too tedious, really. 😉 You can sort of sift the pieces with your hand.

** I really recommend including 1/2 tsp. of peppermint extract per batch.

It's Ready!

Hang Holiday Cheer ~ The Christmas Wreath

My sweet friend Carolyn sent me this precious poem – Just in time to share it with you. As we enter into the fun-filled, Christ-filled holiday season, I pray that the Lord will use the every day, little special things, like Christmas wreaths hung on neighbors’ doors, to remind you of how deep and wide His love is for you. || Rachel

Every Christmas wreath is more than just a decoration… It’s a special reminder of Jesus, the reason for our celebration.

The circle of a Christmas wreath is a never-ending ring,

a reminder of eternal love from our Lord and King

The Christmas Wreath is a sign of welcome, inviting all to enter in

a reminder of Christ’s invitation for all to come to Him.

The middle of a Christmas Wreath is a bare and empty space,

a reminder of what life would be without Christ’s love and grace

So each time you see a Christmas wreath hanging from a door,

may your heart rejoice in the One that Christmas is truly for.

– Holley Gerth

~ To Add a Christmas Wreath to Your Door ~

There are many wonderful ways to create a wreath for your front door. Here are a few simple, stylish wreath ideas.

1. Everyday Holiday :: The wreath on my front door is a simple boxwood square green wreath that I add accessories for each season to dress it up for the appropriate holiday.

2. Living Magnolia Wreath :: Buy a wreath form from your local craft store, like Micheal’s or  A. C. Moore (Remember your coupon!!). Gather magnolia tree leaves and layer the leaves throughout the tree form, one overlapping layer at a time. Fill the form with leaves and hang the wreath on a the door with your favorite ribbon.

3. Christmas Ornaments + Green :: Purchase an inexpensive green Christmas wreath from your local craft or hardware store and whatever ornaments or decorations you would like to attach to the wreath. Use ribbon to loop and tie through the ornaments hook. Then, tie the ribbon to the wreath’s branches. Fill the wreath to achieve the look that you want. Once filled, hang your unique wreath on your front door.

~ How to Hang Your Christmas Wreath ~

1. Purchase a wreath hanger. I got mine from Smith and Hawken. This Christmas season, there are fun sparkly ones at Target.

2. Use a ribbon to hang the wreath. Loop ribbon around the top half of the wreath and carry ribbon to the top of the door. Fasten the two ends of the ribbon to the door with a nail.
